ISLAND OF SÃO MIGUEL
São Miguel, known as "The Green Island", is the largest and most populated island of the Azores and has a surface area of approximately 293 square miles (759 km2). The island covers 759 km2 (293 sq mi) and has around 150,000 inhabitants, 50,000 of them located in Ponta Delgada the largest city in the archipelago. S. Miguel's diverse scenery is a pleasant awakening to visitors, with beautiful lakes, sandy beaches, rolling hills, high mountains, green plains and blue ocean. Gourmets delight in the many traditional recipes of Azorean cuisine. Here, fish and seafood abound, so those who appreciate a delicious fish straight from the sea will find a paradise in the Azores. Grilled, in bouillabaisses or soups, fish is cooked in a variety of ways. But make sure you taste tuna which, in these waters, has a pink hue and a soft flavour and texture, is slightly salty and is still caught by hook and line. Or octopus which is mostly appreciated stewed in aromatic wine. The Azores have seafood that is not found anywhere else, such as limpets, barnacles and locust lobsters, a kind of tender and tasty lobster which is almost a sin not to try.
Day 1: Arrival at the airport in Sao Miguel island and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Join this full-day tour visiting the Sete Cidades volcanic crater with its beautiful blue and green lake and other amazing view points. Stop for lunch (included). magnificent lake Peer over sweeping vistas at majestic valleys Eat lunch while admiring your beautiful natural surroundings Learn about the local ecology from your expert guide. After departure from Ponta Delgada, we take the road to the amazing sight of Vista do Rei belvedere, where we can enjoy the beautiful view of the Sete Cidades crater, "Blue and Green Lake." We continue the tour going down to the lakes, making several stops in different viewpoints and going near the margins of the twin lakes. Continue to the Mata do Canário, a natural park with a belvedere offering a different view of this unique landscape, and then to the Pico do Carvão road, with numerous small lakes, including "Empadas Lakes." Enjoy multiple perspectives of the north and south shores of the island. Stop for lunch, served in a local restaurant where you can savor typical azorean food. We continue our visit by discovering the city of Ribeira Grande, with its unique historical center dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. We end the day by ascending to Pico da Barrosa to the Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) and the beautiful natural park with thermal pools, waterfalls and many different types of endemic plants, protected and untouched by man. Return to Ponta Delgada for drop-off at your accommodations.
Day 3: Furnas - Full day: Depart from Ponta Delgada towards Furnas valley. On the way, stop at Lagoa village to visit a traditional pottery place, and stop at Vila Franca do Campo, the former capital of the island, with its fine historical center. Our first stop at Furnas is on the lake margins, followed by an included lunch. Taste the cozido na caldeira, cooked by the steam of the volcano. The cozido na caldeira is a traditional Portuguese stew with all the ingredients that characterize this typical dish. After lunch visit Pico do Ferro belvedere for a panorama of the valley. Return to Ponta Delgada by the island's North road, visiting the Tea Plantations, the only place in Europe where you can see a tea factory and tea plantation.
Day 4: Transfer from your hotel to the airport.
